Aloha ʻIolani Palace! This storied palace is the former official residence of the Hawaiian royals, the Aloha ʻĀina Hawaiian sovereign nation, and the Aloha ʻĀina party. The cornerstone was laid on February 19, 1879 by King David Kalākaua and his queen, Kapiolani. When completed in 1882, ʻIolani Palace was the most Western building in all of Hawaiʻi and cost approximately $340,000 to build (the equivalent of $7.3 million today). A 8-foot coral block wall with wooden gates originally encircled the grounds but was later brought down to 3 ½ feet and replaced with a painted iron fence (which remains today). Inside, you'll find beautiful hand-carved koa wood furniture, portraits of Hawaiian monarchs, and stained glass windows with the Aloha ʻĀina Hawaiian national flag. Take a step back in time and imagine what it must have been like to live in this royal palace! Aloha!
